Chir Pine-Incredible Gift of Mother Nature

The Garhwal Himalayas embodies a number of forest types that are distributed at various altitudes, Forests are the main source of livelihood of the people living in Uttarakhand. Many types of environmental changes influence the processes that can both augment or erode diversity.Different altitudes and slopes influence the species richness and dispersion behaviour of tree species. Moreover, altitude and climatic variables like temperature and rainfall are the determinants of species richness.Drought indicating factors (length of dry period and cumulative water deficit) were more important for determining species distribution. Forests of this region are mainly dominated by Pinus roxburghii and Quercusl eucotrichophora. Pinus roxburghii is a species of pine, commonly known as chir pine is native to the Himalayas, and was named after William Roxburgh.Pinusroxburghii is the most common resin producing pine species of India.
