World Optometry Day Celebration
World Optometry Day is celebrated internationally on 23rd of March and the following week is World Optometry Week. World Optometry Day is generally celebrated to create awareness about optometry as a profession and it was first celebrated in India by SankaraNethralaya’s Light School of Optometry in the year 1992. Optometrists are the primary healthcare practitioners of the eye and visual system who provide comprehensive eye and vision care, which includes refraction and dispensing, diagnosis and management of disease in the eye, and the rehabilitation of conditions of the visual system as defined by the World Council of Optometry. An optometrist also provides specialized services like vision therapy, sports vision care, low vision care, contact lenses and pediatric care.
In 1958 Optometry is started in india with establishment of the first schools at Gandhi eye hospital, Aligarh and sarojini devi eye hospital, Hyderabad.
Optometrists deliver eye-care services not only from private practice but from hospital eye departments, community clinics, as part of hospital services within large urban centers. Optometry has contributed substantially to reducing the burden of uncorrected refractive error and common eye disease
A program was organized by Optometry Department at UCBMSH, Dehradun for OPTOMETRY 1ST and 2nd year. Following are the events organized by Optometry Department- Quiz competition, Chart making competition, Guest lecture by Guest Speaker, and Informative speech by faculty.
Guest lecture was organized for the students on the topic “Eye Donation” by Guest Speaker Mr. Pinaki Adak, HOD of Optometry Department at Sanskriti University, Mathura.
Students learned about Eye donation is an act of donating one’s eyes after his/her death. Only corneal blinds can be benefitted through this process not other Blinds. It is an act of charity, purely for the benefit of the society and is totally voluntary. It is done after death. So eye-donation should be encouraged in a large scale, as one of the best means of social service. To enable another person obtain vision is one of the best forms of charity. Even after death the donor lives in the eyes of recipient. Eyes from a dead person can enable two blind people to acquire vision.

- 4. Winners of chart competition are Hifza(1st ),Shadma(2nd ), Aman, Madhu(3rd )
