WHAT IS MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY?

Laboratory tests play an important part in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of many diseases in modern medical practice. The laboratory professionals who carry out these tests are medical technologists.

They work under the direction of physicians or scientists. Medical laboratory workers perform a wide range of tests and laboratory procedures that require a high level of skill.

They examine and analyze blood, body fluids for bacteria, parasites, and other microorganisms, and other specimens using precision instruments, such as microscopes and automated analyzers.

They also prepare specimens for examination, count cells and look for abnormal cells in blood and body fluids.

There are two levels of Medical Laboratory workers-

Technicians and Technologists

They work in five major areas of the Laboratory:

  1. Hematology
  2. Clinical Biochemistry

  4. Blood Banking
  5. Immunology

They also work in the area of cytotechnology, phlebotomy, clinical Pathology, Coagulation, Parasitology and Serology.

After the completion of MLT, they can work as a technician in a pathology laboratories and can also find job as Technician in State and Central Government Hospitals. Self-employment is also a very good option for the MLTs who wish to start their own enterprises.

Eligibility Criteria

Duration : 3 years + 1 year internship

Eligibility : The Candidate should have passed the qualifying examination that is higher secondary examination of the Indian school Certificate Examination which is equivalent to 10+2 Higher Secondary Examination after a period of 12 years study .The last two years of study comprising Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB) with English as a compulsory subject, must have passed these subjects individually and must have obtained a minimum of 50% of marks taken together in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
