Low vision is the loss of sight that is not correctible with prescription eyeglassescontact lenses, or surgery. This type of vision loss does not include complete blindness, because there is still some sight and it can sometimes be improved with the use of visual aids.The most common causes of low vision include age-related macular degeneration, diabetes, and glaucoma. Low vision may also result from cancer of the eye, albinism, brain injury, or inherited disorders of the eye including retinitis pigmentosa. If you have these disorders or are at risk for them, you are also at greater risk for low vision.

Management of a patient with low vision is not only tricky but also a challenging situation. It comprises three important components- Low vision aids, evaluation of a patients with low vision and prescription of a low vision aids. Patients with low vision are firstly counsel by the optometrist attending him/her. As, they are very depressed with the life as their vision in the Better Seeing Eye aftertreatment and refractive correction is less than 6/18 and/or the field of vision is reduced to 10 degrees, they are unable to do the basic daily routine work by themselves. So optometrist motivate the patient and then tell them the ways how they can perform the daily activities like brushing, bathing, eating food, reading writing etc.in case of housewife’s with low vision as she do’s the most of the domestic work like cleaning home, washing clothes, preparing food etc.

An optometrist provides (low vision rehabilitative) vision rehabilitation services can provide the help and resources needed to gain back the independence and freedom that once seemed lost. People with low vision can be taught a variety of techniques to perform daily activities with what vision remains.

On 21 December 2019optometry 3rd year students performed and participated low vision activity in Nutrition Lab which they prepared food with blind fold. They prepared Rice, Dal, Roti, Mix Veg, Salad and Tea. Students learn in this activity about how to rehabilitate and motivate the low vision patients. Optometry 2nd and 1st year observed this activity.
